Best Hiking Window
If conditions must be attempted, Monday offers the most viable window as winds slightly subside under the influence of high pressure overhead. Plan an early morning start on Monday to maximize the full daylight window (sunrise just after 6 AM local time) and complete the hike well before darkness. Ensure turnaround discipline regardless of progress. Tuesday should be avoided entirely as winds rebuild and snow arrives by late in the day. Wait for the temperature rebound and calmer pattern later in the week if possible.
Trail: Haystack Road, North Twin Trail, Fire Wardens Trail
Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder
“We put on snowshoes right off (after the bridge crossing) and kept them on all day. The trail was in great shape, nicely packed, and the snow was powery and light. The trench was about 6 inches to start and deepened to more than 2 feet the mile or so near the summit. The forest was smothered in swaths of snow hanging in large bunches off tree branches and collected in huge fantastical shapes. There was sporatic wind, which obliterated the tracks of the two hikers on snowshoes ahead of us, leaving 4-6 inches of drifted snow for part of the ascent. A few intrepid skiers recently cut some turns through the glades but none were out today. Overcast with intermittent sun -- no views except for the nearby peaks.”

“Snowshoes or skis recommend for almost all the way. Loose powder in some spots. Mostly loosely compacted. Spikes would not fare super well.”

“Three of us broke trail up to Hale through 4-5” down low to 8” at the top. We passed maybe 5 people on the way down, all wearing snowshoes. Trail should be in great shape! Though I would hold off on barebooting for a little bit to let it consolidate.”
