Best Hiking Window
No recommended hiking window in the next 48 hours. Friday offers a brief mid-day lull in winds before the Clipper arrives, but conditions are still severe with sub-zero wind chills and ice-covered trails. Saturday brings rapidly escalating winds with gusts potentially near 100 mph and heavy snow — conditions are dangerous on the exposed Franconia Ridge. Wait for the system to fully exit and conditions to stabilize before attempting this peak.

“The trails to and from the ridge are full of postholes and caution is needed. Some of the holes are over 3 feet deep, and most are well over a foot! I hiked with a buddy who used micros and I used snowshoes. I maybe went in twice only because I got to close to the edges. He probably went in about 100 times. Not a fun day for him. The ridge was great, with little to no snow or ice. Very windy on the ridge. I barebooted the ridge and only had to deal with a few spots that were snowy and icy. Used micros down to Greenleaf hut and should have put my snowshoes back on here but I kept my micros on. Live and learn I guess but I should have switched. Take caution and stay in the middle on the trail and good luck!”

“Wore microspikes up to the last water crossing on Falling Waters thinking it would be easier to hop across without snowshoes. Still was not able to stay out water and feet got wet early on. Put on snow shoes after as the snow was soft and I was post-holing a fair amount. Once on ridge line, I switched back to microspikes as the ridgeline was mainly bare rock, but there was a fair amount of drifted snow and ended up with a lot of postholing. At the hut, I switched back to snowshoes and kept them om the entire way down. Lots of postholes, many very deep. Even with snowshoes, I had to be careful to stay in the middle of the trail as the snow was collapsing. Trails conditions were a little rough lots of soft slushy deep snow. With the warming in the next few days, I would think they are going to get a lot worse.”

“Disappointing when the day was forecast bluebird, was sunny at first lookout, no wind however high grey clouds by the time we reached Greenleaf, no sun and as predicted 20-30 mph wind. Bridal was packed to first lookout, then loose granular snow over a firm base to the hut. Very loose starting to the summit in the trees, which got torn up easily. Firm wind swept hard pack from trees to Lafayette summit. Down the ridge, sections were firm wind swept, sections were loose where the snow was pushed by the wind. Really no totally "right" traction. We wore snowshoes but then abused them on the open rocks, most others we passed wore spikes but those rototilled the trail where soft. Some pretty deep post holes. Falling waters was also rototilled pretty bad since we saw few snowshoes. Also some deep postholes and a number of wallow holes?? Probably our two sets of shoes didn't fix much of these beauties. Everything on the ridge today was wind swept by gusty 20-30 mph westerly wind.”
Part of the spectacular Franconia Ridge, usually hiked in combination with Lafayette. The ridge walk between them is one of the best in the Northeast.
