Sunday offers slightly improved conditions with a high of 51°F and lower precipitation probability (47%), though trails will remain saturated and wet rock slabs will still be hazardous. An early morning start Saturday or Sunday is not recommended given the persistent cold and precipitation — wait for temperatures to rise above freezing across the full elevation profile before heading out. Monday (June 1) shows continued rain showers; the earliest reasonable window is late Sunday if precipitation clears ahead of schedule.

Trail: Moat Mountain Trail

Conditions: Dry Trail

“The Moats are good to go. No more snow and there has definitley been some trail work done. No blowdowns and trail is in great shape.”

Trail: Moat Mountain Trail

Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable

“I hiked an out and back to North Moat from Passaconaway Road as did many other hikers including an AMC group. Most of the trail was dry. Some water running down the ledges. However, there were plenty of dry surfaces on the ledges to allow for secure footing. There were some traces of ice in the AM that were easy to avoid. There was approximately ten feet of compacted snow/ice between Red Ridge and North Moat that was flat, so it was easy to cross without traction. Very little mud as it is abnormally dry for April. Never used any traction. Great views from the summits and open ridges. Saw my first wildflower in bloom. A small white 5 petal flower near ground level. Met a couple who were originally from St Petersburg Russia, a Serbian hiker, young hikers from a NH town I used to live, and a hydrogeologist from Portsmouth NH.”

“A group of us decided to hike the moats after seeing the wind speeds that would take place on higher summits. My partner Catherine & I were hosting an AMC young members event where the bunkhouse there was booked out, so we left from there with two other interested people. In the spring the moats usually offer a decent hike that gives the impression one is higher up than they are with the exposed sections. The trail after south moat is definately not clear yet. The monorail held up fairly well i must have post-holed one time. The people i was with bare-booted, but i brought & used rock spikes versus play the confidence game of not being sure if i would slip or not with every step. Looking back it appears every april this is a go to hike while 4ks become less than fun....”

About North Moat Mountain

Standing at 3,196 feet in the Moat Range east of North Conway, this peak offers one of the most rewarding ridge walks in the White Mountain foothills. The standard approach via the Red Ridge Trail rewards hikers with extensive open ledges and sweeping views of the Saco River Valley, Mount Washington, and the Sandwich Range. Significant above-treeline exposure along the rocky ridge makes this summit feel more alpine than its modest elevation suggests. The trail character is rugged, featuring steep pitches and scrambling sections that justify its Very Difficult rating on the 52 With A View list. The open summit ledges provide outstanding 360-degree panoramas, making this one of the most visually rewarding peaks on the list. Its proximity to popular North Conway makes it a frequently visited but genuinely challenging objective for peak baggers and view seekers alike.
