Rescue — Dry River Wilderness, May 15, 2008
Two male hikers, ages 19 and 20, from Pennsylvania · party of 2
On May 15, 2008, two Pennsylvania hikers became lost and off-trail in the Dry River Wilderness while attempting a multi-day Presidential Range traverse, encountering snow depths of 3-5 feet. One hiker lost a sneaker while trudging through the deep snow; both reported being wet and cold. The hikers eventually self-rescued by walking out to Route 302, with one sustaining significant superficial wounds to both feet.
What we can learn
Fish and Game noted that lack of snowshoes and appropriate footwear were significant factors, and reminded hikers that winter conditions still exist in parts of the White Mountains requiring proper knowledge and gear for extreme changing conditions.
