On May 21, 2024, Christine Von Baltzar, 41, suffered a lower-leg injury after slipping and falling on wet, slippery terrain while descending the Falling Waters Trail approximately 1.9 miles from the trailhead. She and her hiking partner attempted self-rescue for about 90 minutes before calling for help at around 7:30 p.m. Rescuers from Pemi Valley Search and Rescue Team and NH Fish and Game carried her out in a litter, and she was transported to Littleton Regional Hospital.
