The couple started up Falling Waters at 1 p.m., summited Little Haystack by 7:30 p.m., and pushed on toward Liberty Springs; about a quarter-mile past the summit they began succumbing to cold, wet conditions after rain off and on all day, and called 911. Rescuers reached them and assisted them off the ridge.
