Best Hiking Window
Friday morning through early Friday afternoon offers the most viable window, with lighter winds and a brief clearing trend before the Clipper arrives. Conditions deteriorate significantly through Friday afternoon and become dangerous Saturday as winds ramp toward hurricane force above treeline and heavy snow creates whiteout potential. An early morning start Friday is strongly recommended to summit and descend before afternoon weather arrives.

“Wow is all I have to say…. 1 week and drastic conditions change. Spikes to start, snowshoes on when we hit the junction. It was 46 to start and 54 when we ended. We thought going up by the Hut would be better, we were wrong. Thankfully we did a loop but post holing in snowshoes up to your hip while trying to walk, was constant and very annoying. It was quite a fine line you had to walk on. Nuts to know how much melt ruined the monorail [not monorail]. We saw everyone in snowshoes thankfully but what a wet heavy snow mess that was. We were gonna go all the way over but my stomach was giving me hell so down we went. Saw Zachary out the but I could not be convinced that I could make it all the way today. Not a fan of seeing 2 different human number 2’s 2” off the trail with tp…. Getting gross out there.”
Trail: Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail, Carter Dome Trail
Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Drifts, Snow - Wet/Sticky
“Did the loop portion counter-clockwise: 19 Mile Brook all the way to the hut; up Carter-Moriah Trail to the peaks; then down Carter Dome Trail. The ascent from the notch is quite steep, but the trail is packed and mostly free of ice. I guess you could do the loop clockwise without a problem. Trail conditions ranged from ice (down low), to mashed potatoes, to deep drifts (up high). Other trip reports indicate hikers have been on Carter-Moriah Trail recently, but you wouldn't know it based on the stretch between Carter Dome and Mt. Hight. The drifts are impressive up there. I'm glad I had snowshoes for that section. (Actually, I wore snowshoes the whole way. The heel lifts were handy for the first six miles.) Gorgeous 360 degree views from Mt. Hight and lots of partial views elsewhere on the route. It was a good day.”
Trail: Camp Dodge Cutoff, Imp Trail, North Carter Trail, Carter Moriah Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Wildcat Ridge Trail
Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
“Snow conditions were perfect, almost no ice on Imp, easy to avoid. I bareboot from car to jct with Carter-Moriah trail, then snowshoes all day. Trail to North Carter is filled with snow drifts. The steep pitch down to Carter Notch is free of ice, no problem going down. Didn’t go across the pond. Great day to be outside, saw only one person doing a similar itinerary but opposite direction (came up from Wildcat ski slopes).”
