Monday offers the clearest window, with improving conditions, no precipitation, and declining winds as high pressure builds in. Sunday remains hazardous due to lingering near-hurricane-force winds and a wind chill advisory through early Monday morning. If hiking Saturday, an early morning start was the only viable option — conditions deteriorate rapidly through the afternoon and evening.
Trail: Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail, Carter Dome Trail
Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
“I hiked the loop over Carter Dome and Mt Hight in a counterclockwise direction. This trip takes one over the highest point in the range and to the best viewpoint in the range. The trails are generally dry. Every so often there were spots with a shallow flow of water on the trail. Not much mud including the path out to Mt Hight that is frequently wet/muddy. Saw the flowers of three Blue Flag off the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Yellow Pond Lilies in Carter Pond, and lots of Bunchberries. Good views at the edge of the pond, at the Pulpit Rock downview, and a short side path off the Carter-Moriah path north of the Carter Dome summit. Great views from Mt Hight. I was surprised not to meet any AT thru hikers or section hikers. Met one AMC croo member from London England, AMC volunteer naturalist, and many local hikers.”
Trail: Baldface Circle Trail, Eagle Link, Wild River Trail, Rainbow, Trail Carter-Moriah Trail
Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
“Trails in good shape, all in all, except Eagle Link, which was really overgrown and looked relatively unused. Had some mud on it (went in to my ankles, then up to my knee at point). Attacked by a defensive grouse hen on Eagle Link (also had a moose encounter on same trail). Wild River and Rainbow were in pretty good shape and easy to follow. Decent amount of water at Zeta Pass (no scoop needed).”
Trail: Ski trails, Wildcat Ridge Trail, Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Carter Moriah Trail, North Carter Trail, Imp Trail
Conditions: Dry Trail
“I started up the ski trails. Middle Polecat/Upper pole Cat. Friends started on Lost Pond and up Wild Cat Ridge. we met up and continued. Overnighted at the hut and up and out over Carter Dome. All good on the trails. Just a few bugs if you stopped, so no summit stops.”

With Dan. Wildcats were very hard but with very nice views. Carters sucked. The descent from north carter to moriah was wild! Nice views getting to moriah too. Last 2 miles wiped me out. 15.5h total
