Avoid hiking Tuesday night and all of Wednesday. Thursday morning offers the earliest potential window if winds subside as forecast, though another cold front and showers are expected Thursday afternoon. An early morning start Thursday — before the next frontal passage — represents the best opportunity in the 48-hour horizon, with the understanding that conditions may still be windier and foggier than typical for this peak.
Trail: Ski trails, Wildcat Ridge Trail, Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Carter Moriah Trail, North Carter Trail, Imp Trail
Conditions: Dry Trail
“I started up the ski trails. Middle Polecat/Upper pole Cat. Friends started on Lost Pond and up Wild Cat Ridge. we met up and continued. Overnighted at the hut and up and out over Carter Dome. All good on the trails. Just a few bugs if you stopped, so no summit stops.”
Trail: Road walk, Camp Dodge Cutoff, Imp Trail, North Carter Trail, Carter Moriah Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Nineteen Mile Brook Trail
Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
“Imp was relatively dry until around 3,200-3,300 feet where there is always water. Herd paths forming around tough spots with deep water. Running water on North Carter Trail started around 4,100 feet and stopped around 4,300 feet. No real issues with water across the ridge, with the exception of a few spots that had running water. Plank bridges are in good shape. No real issues with slippery slabs or rocks, as long as you take some time and think about where you want to step. The weather report this morning for this area was spot on but a fun time was had.”
Trail: Imp Trail, North Carter Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Nineteen Mile Brook Trail
Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
“My route was up the southern half of Imp Trail, up North Carter Trail, south on Carter-Moriah Trail to Zeta Pass, then down Carter Dome Trail and out via Nineteen Mile Brook Trail. (If you haven't been to the Imp Face ledges before, I recommend taking the northern half of Imp Trail. There are great views from the ledges and it's roughly the same mileage.) Middle Carter has some outstanding views of the Presidential Range and the Wild River Wilderness. South Carter has some comparatively restricted views. Otherwise, the highlight of this hike was the relatively easy ridge walk above 4000 feet. There's lots of rhodora and other flowers blooming in places.”
