Trail: Wentworth Trail

Conditions: Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush

“Fresh powdery snow of about 3-5 inches. We were the first in the trail for the day so we started in snowshoes and switched to spikes. Spikes were snow-balling badly, especially on the descent. Steeper sections were solid ice under powder. This made for very slippery conditions. At times we wished we had packed crampons. I think there was evidence of post-holing towards the summit, from the thaw earlier in the week, but the fresh snowfall made it hard to tell if they were holes or just uneven terrain covered by fresh snow. Until the ice melts, crampons may be needed at times. Spikes for the rest of it.”

“Beautiful day for Mt Israel. Moody skies and sidewalk conditions made for a great hike. It was nice crossing paths and chatting with a fellow hiker. Small world out there on the trails for sure. Micros from start to finish.”

“Finally getting back in the swing of things after a few months of a bum shoulder. Israel was great today. The snow is starting to soften up, though, so we wore shoes the whole way, but plenty of people were just in spikes. Either way, it feels good to be back out there.”

About Mount Israel

Rising in the heart of the Sandwich Range in central New Hampshire, this 2,630-foot summit offers a rewarding outing for hikers seeking a moderate challenge without committing to a full day in the mountains. The primary route via the Mead Trail winds through pleasant hardwood and mixed forest, characteristic of the lower Sandwich Range terrain. While the summit itself is largely wooded, open ledges near the top reward hikers with satisfying views toward the Squam Lakes region and surrounding hills. The peak sits within the Sandwich Range Wilderness area, adding a sense of genuine backcountry character despite its modest elevation. As one of the 52 With A View (52 WAV) peaks, it draws peakbaggers working through that popular New Hampshire list, making it a meaningful objective for hikers building experience across the region's varied terrain.
