Best Hiking Window
Sunday (March 1) offers the best combination of conditions in the near-term window: clearer skies are possible and precipitation chance is low at 16%, though temperatures are brutally cold. Monday (March 2) brings clear skies and virtually no precipitation (1%), but also the coldest temperatures of the week with a high of only 13°F — experienced cold-weather hikers only. Tuesday (March 3) should be avoided due to 63% precipitation probability and incoming moderate snow. Early morning starts are recommended to maximize daylight; plan for short winter day length.

“Trail was nicely packed. I went early knowing it was going to be warm. Just started getting sticky last 1/4 mile.”

“My friend and I hiked Mount Israel to catch the sunrise and full moon. We wore snowshoes the entire way. The trail was nicely packed out other than some snow drift areas in the higher elevations. There were a few ice bulges just beyond the Squam Lake viewpoint. No issues hiking up them and with careful footing, it was possible to avoid them on the way down. We managed to reach the peak just as the sun set. It was beautiful! On the descent, we caught glimpses of the full moon between the trees. Overall, a great snowshoe hike in ideal conditions.”

“Fun day joining Snowflea on her whackadoodle multi-year winter mission. We spiked up to Israel and wore our snowshoes the rest of the day. Took turns breaking trail down Mead and were excited to see one set of snowshoe tracks headed towards Guinea Pond. Back to Sammich Notch Road we were on our own again but the trail was well marked. The road is groomed for snowmobiles, could go back to spikes if you wanted and definitely could wear spikes down on Bear Camp as it is 1) well tracked out and 2) kinda boney in there right now anyway. Plenty of animal tracks today, the highlight was a luge track, which I learned was from an otter sliding on its stomach. I gotta try that sometime…”
