Friday, with an early morning start strongly recommended to maximize daylight and return before afternoon clouds thicken and Saturday's Clipper system begins influencing conditions. Avoid Saturday entirely — heavy snow (87% probability) and strengthening winds are expected to make conditions significantly more hazardous.
Trail: Blueberry Ledge Trail, Rollins Trail, Dicey's Mill Trail
Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
“We started off with bareboots on the road and the warm day yesterday and the cold night made trails quite firm. This also made all the butt sliding from the day before to an ice luge. Therefore once starting to ascend, we put on our snowshoes until we hit the house for the driveway/roadwalk out. Some large post holes from people out there so try and not break your leg. The ledges were insanely easy as there is so much snow up there right now. One 1 spot was the normal tricky but with help of a tree, no issues. I think this is the most snow in the winter up there I have been in. Thankfully Rollins trail was not post holed up like the other two. Breezy at times but mostly sunny and happy faces finishing up grid peaks.”

“Snowshoes door to door today. From the parking lot back, all trails are well broken out but still a bit unconsolidated (more so at higher elevations, obviously). Even with snowshoes on, if you step off, you will quickly be in deep. The ledges are as easy as I’ve ever experienced them. There are large, well-packed snow piles on all of them, making for easy work even with snowshoes on. Until the trail consolidates more and/or there is a freeze-thaw cycle, I can’t imagine crampons being necessary or useful. A few postholes especially on the Passaconaway half of the loop, but very few on the Whiteface side. We tried to fill a few in, with mixed success. Great conditions—go get it!”

“Counter-clockwise. Spikes up to Passa summit where I put on the snow shoes for the descent. Kept them on until the Whiteface lookout where I put on the spikes again. Once below the ledge I put the snow shoes back on because it was too loose and I started post-holing. I doubt I'll go counter-clockwise again in these conditions. Met two other hikers on Rollins in snowshoes. Trails are in decent shape now but between the peaks snowshoes are the way to go. Going up to Passa in spikes was easy and no potholing or back sliding.”
