Friday morning through early Friday afternoon offers the best conditions over the next 48 hours, with lighter winds and before the Clipper system arrives. An early start Friday is strongly recommended to summit and descend before afternoon snow showers and increasing winds develop. Saturday should be avoided or approached with extreme caution — heavy snow and rapidly building winds make for a deteriorating and potentially dangerous day.
Trail: Mt. Tecumseh Trail
Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes
“Was able to spike up and down before things got too soft, but you have to stay in the middle of the trail and have good balance or you'll go for a fall. Quite a few postholes and divots down low and up high along the ridge, middle section through the steeps is in better shape but not great. The final approach to the summit has a partial monorail, which is 50/50 as far as stability goes. Got lucky with the weather as it was sun and clouds. As soon as I finished at 10:30AM, the rain showers started.”

“My partner & a friend decided to tag Tecumseh on Saturday as the weather at higher summits was expected to be poor that day. I needed this summit for the winter 48 list. The remaining hikes i have to complete the list are mostly undesirables in my opinion. We left Barndoor hostel where I was hosting an AMC young member's social weekend event where the whole hostel was booked out. When we left Rumney there was ice rain falling. We took out time and started just after 7am. The sun never came out & the summit was socked in. The trail conditions were still decent. We carried snowshoes but the trail was hardened ice most of the way. This hike was completed in short order so we could get back to the hostel.”
Trail: Mt. Tecumseh Trail
Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Slush
“The area got 3-5 inches of snow down low and more up high. I was glad to be wearing my snow shoes. The snow was soft due to the warm temps and there were snow drifts along the cone to the peak. Snow was sticky and clinging to my shoes, unavoidable in the warm temps. Trail is still very unconsolidated. So if you head there tomorrow, another warm day, I strongly recommend you wear snow shoes to stamp down the soft snow. A bluebird day with great views from the peak!”
