Miroslaw Lobasz (trail name Kermit), a 73-year-old from Newark, Delaware, thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail

On August 13, 2026, Miroslaw Lobasz fell down deck stairs at the Zealand Hut in Bethlehem, suffering a serious but non-life-threatening head injury. AMC staff assisted on scene while Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team volunteers and Conservation Officers hiked 2.8 miles to reach him. Lobasz was carried in a litter to the trailhead and transported by ambulance to Littleton Regional Hospital.
