Best Hiking Window
If conditions are acceptable to you, Sunday offers the least-bad window of the next 48 hours — attempt an early morning start to maximize daylight and return well before dark. Monday should be avoided entirely due to a forecast high of only 7°F and a low of -12°F, which pushes conditions toward dangerous. Tuesday brings warming but significant precipitation risk (46%) that could create new ice hazards.
Trail: Kilkenny Ridge Trail, bushwhack, Devil's Hopyard Trail
Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
“Very nice hike up Rogers Ledge via Kilkenny Ridge Trail. We bushwhacked to get to North Peak. We saw in a trail report here that the canister was missing, but there was a red paracord left around a tree on the highest point. We found it, it was still there! There was a nice view on top of North Peak's cliff, near the summit. After the short bushwhack, we took plenty of time on Rogers Ledge's summit! The views were absolutely gorgeous with the fall foliage! After a long break on top, we did the Devil's Hopyard trail since it's part of the Terrifying 25 list. Nothing very terrifying there, except for slippery rocks and deep holes. It was fun, though!”
Trail: Mill Brook Trail, Kilkenny Ridge Trail
Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
“This is my third jaunt to Rogers Ledge and I just can’t convince myself that I love the view. The Prezis are visible but seem really far away. Because they are. LOL. However Mill Brook Trail is an absolute dream to hike so this one is all about the journey. The trail design is fabulous, because how great is it to hike alongside a babbling brook? There are no steep sections until just below the summit and those are mostly handled with stone steps. The icing on the cake, however, is the amazeballs trailwork recently done on this trail. Holy smokes people, there is saw and axe work visible and a truly impressive amount of brushing. Whoever you are, I am sending you hugs, because it is absolutely marvelous!! On the downside we found a recent campfire site right at the summit. Fire risk is currently “very high” and there was a lot of brush and dead stuff piled on and around where this fire was. I cleaned it up as best I could. Sigh. So dangerous.”
Trail: Unknown Pond Trail, Kilkenny Ridge Trail, Horn Spur
Conditions: Dry Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant
“Overnight backpack, starting at Unknown Pond North and staying at the Unknown Pond tentsite. Had it to myself. Five campsites, two campfire areas, a privy, and a bear box. Height of luxury! Pond is water source. Unknown Pond trail is in good shape, easy footing. Kilkenny Trail from there to the Horn also in good shape. I took the leftmost trail at top of the spur to avoid rock scrambling. On day 2, hiked Kilkenny Ridge Trail the other direction to Roger's Ledge which is simply spectacular. Be aware: the hike from the pond to the ledge requires passage across an extensive bog area. The most important bridges there are sketchy or even missing, making for tricky passage, with seemingly bottomless mud on either side awaiting the hapless hiker. Even so, I did make it through more or less dry-footed, and back again. Maybe do this route in drought conditions.... All told, though, a beautiful and serene place to camp. Lots of moose scat on all the trails, but never saw one.”
