Best Hiking Window
Friday is the recommended window — overcast but manageable winds and no significant new precipitation. Plan an early morning start to maximize daylight (approximately 11.9 hours available Friday) and return well before dark. Avoid Saturday entirely due to heavy snow forecast, and Sunday will likely bring consolidated but icy post-storm conditions requiring reassessment.
Trail: Stinson Mountain Trail
Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Postholes
“Picked up another inch or two of snow Friday morning and temperatures never ended up warming much, so the work week ended up being a net gain in snowpack. Apart from the snowmobile portion, the trail was VERY soft this afternoon. Someone slid down the trail today, and particularly on the upper half of the trail, whenever they walked, they installed gonad-deep postholes. There is a lot of snow up here and it hasn't consolidated yet, so if you insist on hiking in Microspikes instead of snowshoes, use the groomed snowmobile trail. Misty afternoon with temperatures around freezing.”

“After a super fun morning at Tenney Mountain Resort, I headed to Stinson with the splitboard. I have splitboarded/snowboarded here several times in the past and this was the best of the best in terms of conditions. Lots of snowmobiles on the snowmo trail, so visibility is a must. Everyone Friendly. Snowmobiles made the trail well-groomed, like a ski trail. Quick descent until hiking trail. To speed-check, I used the edge of trail, pulling a lot of snow into the trail. LOts of barebooters/microspikers on the hiking trail and they did sink a bit, but, I filled in a lot with the old snowboard. Super fun!!!!”
Trail: Stinson Mountain Trail, snowmobile trail
Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Postholes
“Hiking trail is packed out for ski/snowshoe use, but not enough for Microspiking (unless you're a postholer, as evidenced by the pockmarks and postholes). There was already a good base before the storm, so there's a lot of snow up here. A Microspiker had a tough time on the snowmobile corridor portions, as it's sugar snow there. Off trail, it's still good powder (as observed by ski tracks). If you insist on "winter hiking" this mountain in Microspikes, please use the snowmobile corridor (you can get it from the trailhead), as the groomer/snowmobiles will repair your carnage (unlike on the hiking trail). Cloudy afternoon with snow flurries and temperatures in the lower 20s at the trailhead.”
