·Mount Passaconaway·Dicey's Mill Trail

28-year-old female hiker from Fall River, Massachusetts, hiking with her dog

Elizabeth O'Neill, 28, fell into a brook while making a crossing on a multi-peak hike from Mt. Tripyramid to Mt. Whiteface to Mt. Passaconaway, saturating her backpack and all equipment. She attempted to set up her tent on the Dicey's Mill Trail but had difficulty and called 911 due to increasing rain and concern for her safety. Conservation Officers hiked to her location and escorted her to the trailhead at 11:35 p.m.

What we can learn

The release notes the outcome could have been much worse if O'Neill had not carried the ten essentials, implicitly encouraging hikers to be well equipped for conditions.

Before you head out: check the forecast, carry the Ten Essentials, leave your plans with someone, and be willing to turn back. See current conditions →
