Reiner Harper, 40, his wife Susan, and their five children (ages 6 to 17) of Toronto planned to hike to the North Doublehead Mountain Shelter in Jackson but could not find it and turned back, getting off the trail on the descent after dark. The family called for help by cellphone and NH Fish and Game was notified at 9 p.m. Conservation officers located the party of seven at about 10:30 p.m. using whistles and cellphone contact and walked them out.

What we can learn

Cell phones are not safety gear and do not always work in the mountains; carry proper footwear, clothing, light, and gear to survive an unplanned night out.
