Rescue — Presidential Range, Feb 17, 2008
Two male hikers, ages 30 and 29, from Arlington, Virginia, attempting a 19-mile Presidential traverse · party of 2
Alex Obert (30) and Steven McCay (29) began a 19-mile Presidential traverse on February 17, 2008, but failed to reach their destination at AMC Highland Center by 7 p.m. as planned. Heavy rain, high winds, and flash flood conditions on February 18 hampered both searchers and the hikers' ability to descend due to swollen brooks. They were spotted on the Dry River Trail by aerial searchers on February 19 and hoisted to safety by Army National Guard helicopter, both in good condition.
What we can learn
Even experienced winter hikers should not hesitate to turn back or postpone outings when severe weather is predicted or encountered. The best of clothing and equipment may be no match for the severe winter weather often encountered in New Hampshire's White Mountains.
